I create the work that I do in order to pull myself out of my comfort zone. I believe that one of the best ways to capture amazing work is to step out of one's comfort zone. I know that might sound ironic considering the fact that I have a concentration titled: Comfort Zone. For me, capturing those images were uncomfortable because at the beginning of the concentration I had to get a little intimate with the camera. Not only that but later on I had to take pictures of my family members going about their business. It was awkward for them and uncomfortable for me but it really helped to establish my concentration. Stepping out of my comfort zone has allowed me to experiment with composition, lighting, and camera settings. So I plan to continue to step out of my comfort zone.
I feel that any work that I do must have a personal connection to me. Whether it's using a subject matter that I know personally or a setting that I enjoy visiting, all must show something about me. I often reveal myself in my work so that, in a way, it can be more sincere. I also try to pick a setting with good lighting (mostly warm lighting) so that it can emphasize the mood that I'm going for. And the concept is always connected to the concentration.
In my current work, I've been concentrating on capturing my comfort zones as well as those whom I am comfortable with. It is kind of ironic (as I have mention before) because one's comfort zone is very personal to them, so capturing it on camera is like a contradiction because it becomes uncomfortable. I am a home-body/introvert so I like to spend most of my time at home and (sometimes) interact with the people there, but I wanted to challenge myself. I wanted to challenge myself to step outside of my 'box' and interact with others through photography. Honestly, it's more like invading their space but it's way for me to grow artistically and, quite frankly, socially.
